    Listing of fish friendly vet's

    Hi all.

I spent over an hour on the phone this weekend trying to find a vet that deal with fish. The most common reply was

"I'm sorry but the we don't have any experience with fish, perhaps you could try vet xxxx"

after ringing a LOT of vets I eventually found one that agreed to make an appointment. This particular vet wasn't particularly close or cheap and didn't that know a lot about fish BUT was prepared to listen to what I had to say and even did a search on the net while I was there to assist.

I just wondered if there was interest in starting a new section similar to the store directory and have one for "fish friendly" vets, at least it can give members an idea as to what vets in their area they can go to...

The Vet I went to was "Karringal Vet hospital" in frankston VIC.

My local vet where i take my dog to get its neddles has a ZOO vet workign for them. When i spoke to the zoo vet they where quite willing to do a faecal examination to determine problems etc.

Didnt get the cost but here are the vet details.

they have 2 clinics actually not sure which one the zoo vet visit more often but a phone call will work wonders im sure.

They will return call within 15 minutes whenever possible.

These are good vets they are involved with wires and one if the owners is a very good bird vet as well. So i totally recommend them for all vet needs.

    Found Another

Well after think for a couple of minutes after post my first vet i though that this is sucha good idea that i might put a bigger effotr in.

So i called around taronga zoo etc etc.

Came up with this. A vet who actually advertises that they treat fish.

    So here it is

    http://www.birdvet.com.au

Go to the site it has a section on takign fish in. What he wants you to take in adn the information he requires you to gather to take in as well.

Consultation costs i was told voer the phone are $56 plus meds and any other costs.

I am sure there are others so lets gets this list going!

Dr. Rob Jones is the vet for Melbourne Aquarium.
    Phone: 9792 1200
His practice is in Dandenong. I spoke with him last night & he is willing to diagnose flukes and other fish problems. He can disect and give a pathology report if need be.

He reckons that small flukes can reside deep in the gill fissures and avoid medication if it is not administerred long enough.

If my apparent fluke problem re emerges, I will take a fish to him for diagnosis. Even if it becomes a sacrificial fish, at least I will get a proper diagnosis & may then treat my tank more confidently.

Thanks for that information Bill. It's good to know we have someone in Melbourne who understands fish.

Send me an email before you decide to sacrifice any of your fish. I may have another solution for you.
