    fattening them up

I noticed a comment before about Heckels liking a diet rich in veges - too true. Hey - in their natural environment, the pH is too low for even mozzie wrigglers to live. Up in Townsville, I met a guy who used to import wild discus in Europe for over 20 years before he moved to Aus. He told me the same thing and what he suggested was to put some broccoli floretts in the tank. I gave it a shot being a sceptic. I attached a small broccoli peice to a lead plant weight. next day, only a stem left with the heckels. No cat fish in my tanks either. give it a go and see what happens. If nothing gets eaten, then just take it out and ignore all my further replies/advice - I think you'll be surprised though!

Wild discus only please. Or bring back the old strains from the 80's.

    broccoli

raw or blanched (2-5secs in boling water just to soften it). They didn't seem to care either way.

they are now 11.5 cm so they've grown 1.5cm in seven weeks and are pretty healthy now. Will be moving them out of the 2 footer tonight, to a 240litre, as they are starting to mark territories and things are heating up.
got three more 12cm coming tomorrow so they should all be the same size.will post pics soon.
