i had poor plant growth for a while too, the plants had good root growth but just seemed to fade away slowly. but when i added a lot more depth to the gravel, they seemed to make a good recovery. ...

i use the bath for really big pieces. lot's of water and changed it when the water was really 'black'. then drained the water into the garden after

I do have some that i'm soaking at the moment. still has some browning of the water but have been soaking for months. but with a bit of charcoal you should be looking good.

On the defence of a planted tank.
in my experiance the tank just needs to be well established with plants before adding juvies.
I've got a really small golden in with two large ones and it does...

you could try re arranging the tank and hope the pecking order changes.
Is there enough room for the four? i removed 2 (out of 4 in a 350L tank) and the nipping and snapping died off a fair bit. ...

swimming pool (salt/chlorinate) works for me.

I had a sick fish that resembles your pictures.
I used salts
and melafix (tea tree oil)
and after a month they cleaned right up. even that white cloudy eye.

How big is your tank?
I can get similar drift wood peices to whats in my tank. but that would be the smallest peice.

i've had luck growing wrigglers in a bucket of water thats holding drift wood (to remove discolouration). they (wrigglers) seem to love the dirty brown water
