You know what's nice? These seemingly hard fish, crowded up to the glass, just begging for food, just like a good cichlid should.
No matter the colour, good healthy, sassy, arrogant discus are all...

Hi there Gerry and welcome!
First of all, get the largest tank you can afford, as discus do love space. Think on the lines of 10g per fish, and a minimum of 5 discus, as they do better in...

Got me my 6th shellie species today! Lepidiolamprolgus Meeli, and they've acclimated beautifully! They ate tonight as well!
This took a little "fishie-shuffling" to accomplish, as shellies do best...

To the question at hand:
Particle filtration BEFORE bio. A little after bio for "polishing" the water is good too.
Most biomedia will clog and foul very very quickly if the larger particulates...

I feel that biowheels are unnecessary, and I shudder at the thoughts of tossing filter media in the belief that the biowheel houses "enough" of the biobugs to prevent a mini-cycle. If you stuff your...

Our Nitrifying bacteria require Oxygen-rich water in order to thrive. Airstones do NOT supply that, as they are primarily for increasing the surface area of the water, thus adding O2 into the water...

HA HA HA! That's neat! At least the conversions seem to be accurate. In Canada we regularly think of speed in KpH, but fishies are in Fahrenheit degrees
Go figure ;)

I just use water from the tap, cold and hot mixed, and dechlored.
Then again, I only have one discus tank, which gets 2 @ weekly waterchanges of 50%, and a couple of "pleco-poo" vacs in between....

Yep, I've done it many times, how I just stuff extra filter sponge in all my filters, and "raid" the seeded sponge when I start a new tank.
As for the question at hand here, it's not the air that...

With a KH like yours, Peat is an excellent idea!
Just for giggles, test the pH and KH in a bucket after it's "sat out" for 24 hours. that's your "true" readings.

Common garden worms are a good nutritious food source, as are the "red wigglers" that are sold for sportfishing.
Grindal worms, whiteworms, are also easy to culture, and an excellent treat for the...
