I realise this is an old post, but to set your mind at rest, I've had 9 pepps in with a large log in a 6 ft tank for a number of years, with no noticible notches on the log from the pepps at all....

When you say Excel isn't "natural", just to be clear, it's a plant fertiliser, not a poison.
I've had great results using excel daily for 2-3 weeks, where the UV made no difference on my tank.

It could be. I tend to take the conservative approach now and figure that it's worth sacrificing one to stop the rest from getting sick. But that's just me.
