I get this problem from time to time as well (Not quite as bad though).
I just left my discus along & continued with normal water changes etc & more often then not, the spots would disappear...

I'm actually looking to upgrade my small tank as well, so I know exactly what your going through.
I'd be going option #2 but also adding a canister filter.

If you are washing out your filter media, you should be using tank water (IE - Tank water removed during a water change).
Sometimes giving your filter matter a real thorough clean can do more harm...

If you have a smaller tank like me (140L), Bunnings sell 25L water containers (Food grade). Grab youself a few of them & fill them up after every water change.
Water should be aged for approx 3...

Never a wise move adding smaller discus to an established tank with larger ones... Trust me,...

Have had the exact same problem with my white discus at the moment... I was watching it dart around the tank yesterday but didn't give it a 2nd thought, until it was laying on the bottom of the tank....

I landed up finding a Chemist that had some in stock (Was a lucky find IMO), but it seems as though it's getting harder & harder to come by.
Of course 50g does go a damn long way :D
