I not sure on your test kit but if it is turning yellow after one drop it sounds like you have very low kh
But this sounds like your problem.
I wouldnt use the rain water you will be suprised...

im not sure what RO unit you have but most unit that have flushing system have a tap to turn that bypasses the cartridges and puts it all thru the membrane.You need to leave the water on...

How is this food made.
Does it have tiny air bubbles in it simular to golden pearls so it stays suspended in the water coloum?
Sounds like it is good but not sure if the fry would reconise it as...

Why not go both width and height.

1. make sure ou sump is big enough to handle the bit of drainage when power is out.

I have always just feed the tank as much as i would fully stocked.
Let the food decompose abit and do water changes every few days.
Leave it for 4-6 weeks and then add stock.
Works for me.

IMO i wouldnt pay anymore than $80-$100 depending of width and dividers etc..
With the price of new tank now days second arent worth much IMO.
