I live in Central Pennsylvania. I think here in US the water is sort of hard because of rock around us (limestone, dolomite, etc). However, I keep discus here and they are fine. I also read on fish magazine people keep discus in New Jersey/New York.

if the water is hard you could add a peice of driftwood and that nauturally softens the water. it also looks pretty good with a nice bit of anubia growing on it
