are they suitable? i read somewhere that they can also remove essential
nutrient.

I haven't seen the need to have one,I believe that they do clean up the good with the bad.

In a planted tank most of the time when a UV is purshased is when they have a case of the green water.

I have one on my planted tank and I don't think that it affects the tank or ferts. What they do is really buffer the water. I have never seen it so clear.

interesting. when you say buffer the water do you mean polish?

i believe he means polish the water. i run a coralife turbotwist 9 watt uv sterilizer on my 80 gallon and it works good at keeping the water clear. easy to hook up.

actually both. i have mine hanging on the back of my tank and it's fed by a maxijet 600 that is hidden in the back.
