Glosso or riccia.
You need high light to achieve a good looking carpet.

you can't

the moment you start the lawn by adding a substrate your tank is no longer "bare bottom"

I wonder.

If you attached riccia to some sort of sinking (weighted) mesh, maybe you could achieve a kind of lawn effect since riccia doesn't require a substrate, just something to attach to.

Then the riccia 'mat' could be removed to facilitate cleaning.

Glossi IMO is the best option

Glosso looks great. Needs a pretty intense light though (or so I've heard, don't really know) so that it doesn't start stretching up to the surface.

Then it won't be a BB tank.
I prefer glosso for carpeting looks excellent, riccia i love for the pearling.

hairgrass?

ive got them running around in half of my tank, pretty fast growing with proper lighting and co2...

recently just added in glosso... i've used them for my lower/flatter substrate areas and on the hilly substrate, ive used the hairgrass.

running a thin piece of plastic dividers in the substrate so that the roots wouldnt grow over each other and cause a mess... i'll try to post up a pic in a few weeks

coops Blyxa Japonica is what I have used it grows to the same height as hair grass but looks better and grows in clumps only where you place it.

I have posted a pic of mine : )
