Just another one of those genetic questions which i have no idea about.
I have a young pair just formed and was wondering about the outcome of thier young, ATM there is only 2 wrigglers but hopefully in future spawns i should get more.

Would i get a mixture of both sorts? or
some muddy looking blue discus?

mmm....

Gee Ben, you do know the questions to ask, don't you.

I have no idea mate. I do know that with my own rose red female, no matter who I crossed her with, there were always some with her colour and markings, and some with more blue striations. But................if that is normal, sorry, I don't know.

Rod, where are you :o

Well its been almost 3 months and after 5 spawns, i/we got the fry to attach to the parents.
It is only a small spawn, which i estimate to be more than 40+ fry.

So far so good, but i am still none the wiser, what will the fry look like when they get older? I know nonthing about genetics, so if anyone has any ideas i would like to hear about them!

here is a pic, they are around 5 days old.

cheers,
Ben

hard question

This is a guess at what they will turn out like, you will probably get about 35% turk, 25% rose red, 15% mostly turk, 15% most rose red and 10% "unknown". This is just a guess. I believe that the turk will be the dominent gene since that was the first strain developed and probably the closest to natural ones.

Cheers Woll,
I guess time will tell!

i like the idea of the "unknown"

wows that's a real huge tank! Size of my community tank.

I have my fishies in a 2' x 18'' x 12''.

Only mum with the fishies as they were actually born in the community tank. Successfully moved them once they were free swimming.

I'll try to get pics ASAP so we can share and compare.

Like ladyred said, I find they all have stress bars from the red rose.

How old are your fishies now?

(this is my first spawn, sorry for getting so excited.)

yep the tank is a bit large for them!

They are just over 1 and 1/2 weeks old now.
They started to eat brine shrimp from yesterday.

Look forward to your pictures!

Hi Skoom!
thanks for the pictures mate!

The colour on the red rose is awesome!

I saw a little neon in one of the pictures, have you had any problems with them? did they eat any fry?
i am sure the parents kept them at bay and did not let the neons near there little babies!

You and the parents are doing an excellent job!

more pictures as they progress!

Ben

Thanks for the comments guys.

I'll keep the pictures posted as they come through.

Yeah the parents keep on spawning in the community tank, hence you see the neons. I will put them into their private resort (to do their thang) when I am not as busy.

I might have to leave this batch in the community tank as is and let nature take its course (in my 4').

Cheers.

Hi Skoom,
How are they going? you should have the next batch on track now.

I am know able to sort of tell whats what, but will know more in a few months when they colour up!

our of around 30 babies

%10 have no stress bars
%20 have nice clean stress bars
%2 were defective/culls
and the remaining %68 have broken stress bars.

will see what happens as far as colour goes down the track!
