Very very nice looking fishies you got there.

From the photos of the ones we can see clearly i can only see a slight bit of white markings in the Gill plates.

I think they look absolutely awesome and love the bright colouring.

Surely hope that they stay that bright they dont appear to be colour fed at all due to the clearness of the finage.

So it looks like you got a couple to many there. So let me know when you want to ship a couple down here :) I prmoise ill look after them for you.

Thanks for the compliments guys but the credit needs to go to Roy Khoo via Rod Lewis. I told Rod I wanted some nice yellow fish and this is the result. Roy doesn't use any hormones etc (I don't think he needs to).

I believe they are golden (brown based) x golden pb, then backcrossed several generations to goldens (brown based). One has very light stress bars which would make for an interesting cross later. A couple have a bit of blue in their fins aswell... so it will be interesting to see what they turn out like.

They're very healthy (aggressive eaters) and started eating out of my hand the very next day. The circle in the 2nd pic is the size of a CD. They were $75 each which is well worth it for good shape, colour and health.

Ps I have some solid red melons (well almost) from Roy aswell which I believe are just as nice. I got these mid last year and will post pics when I take some more, I'll also post pics of when they were younger aswell.

Chuong,

They are looking really sweet. :)

Feed them well and watch them grow.

FYI, they are not color enhanced or anything. The fishes are in their original state and i call them golden melon.

Enjoy the fishes :)

"Good shape on those young fish Roy!! Excellent. :D

I would like to see the parent stock of these "yellow melons" if you
could please. In my many years as a dicus hobbyist breeder, I have
never managed to find a 'lemon yellow' coloured discus that could
maintain its colour without the use of chlrophyll yellow colour
enhancers to spice things up. They always seem to go orangey brown
after a while, be it a couple of weeks or months, so if these are
trully as u say not colour enhanced, then I must say this is a great
achievement! :D

I've tried these "Dickson Goldens" from young Dickson in Penang,
"Millenium golds" from Chai KS in Singapore, even some Super Ogons
from Robert in Melaka, but they all come nice and yellow when they
first arrive and when I feed them food with no colour enhancer to pump
grow them, the bright yellow just goes away. Of course before shows, I
feed up some chlrophyll yellow to the show fish and the nice yellow
colour comes back. There is obviously chatter behind the scenes about
certain perceived detrimental effects the yellow colour enhancer (and
colour enhancers in general)may have on fish. So far I have not had
any conclusive evidence to prove either way.

Can u enlighten us more on this lemon yellow discus of yours? I am all
ears. Always looking for that elusive super yellow fish. :?:

Hi Merrylin,

Yes there has been a couple of shipments of Roy's golden melon come to Australia, actually there is some more arriving next week. I love them, i've got 16 of them in my own collection that are about 4 to 5". I'll take some pics in the near future and post them. Mine are not as yellow as the photos on this thread, i feed too much red color enhancer like tetra bits, prawn and scollop roe for that. Mine are more golden orange color but very very clean and fabulous shape.

I'll try and get some recent pics of them. Most have head and fin striations and a bit of white on the gills, a couple are solid yellow. They are about 4 - 5in TL and there is a pair that has laid several times.

I'll post some more pics in a few months. They are probably not as big as they could be as I've been pretty busy and they were neglected a bit . Also had a problem with nitrites in the tap water.

I usually only have the room light on and they don't look really yellow until you turn the tank light on. I haven't turned the tank light on for a while and was pleasantly surprised, kinda forgot what they looked like :o .

I fed colour bits just as a test and one fish in particular really liked them and developed some orange similar to Rod's pic but not to that extent. It only took a few days for it to start to show.

Hi Chuong

Your fish look darn beautiful, very nice shape I've ever seen, no wonder Roy's fish was one of champions at Aquarama 2005.

May I ask do you feed them tetra colourbits at all?

To Rod

Would you be able to let us know when your next order from Roy will be please.
