Just wanting to know, do UV sterilisers/clarifiers get rid of algae that is growing on gravel, plants, etc. Or does it only prevent that from happening and keep the water clear?

UVs are great, and wonderful insurance for your valuable fish BUT they can only kill bacteria or algae that flow past the bulb. In other words, algae growing on your plants will continue to grow. They will kill free floating algae spores in the water, so you will never have a problem with 'green water'. I have UVs running on five of my tanks at the moment and still have a problem with algae growing on the glass if I leave the lights on too long. However, the health of those fish (around 80 discus plus various fry) has never been better. I can thoroughly recommend UVs.
