I finally got some altifrons after wanting them for quite a while. I now have a tank with substrate.

I can't take the credit for them as they were brought as adults.

They were purchased a couple of months ago as a trio but no spawning activity as yet.

And I've found out they are piscavores :( .... poor blue rams!

have they found the bottom of the glass yet?

There's only one bag of sand so the bottom shows at times.

I'm about 90% sure the three fish in the pics were all males, so I obtained another pair from the same source.

The new female bred with the dominant male about a month ago but I stripped them too early. They have bred again this afternoon.

I have been talking to a guy who has suggested these are infact not tocantins altifrons. I tend to agree with him as tocantins have a higher body profile, pointed mouth (start of the dorsal fin area) and a fully spotted tail.

He is 90% sure these are the aripuana I variant. I believe Merrilyn's alti's are aripuana I, but these look totally different to mine. Her's have a striped tail and a much larger lateral spot.

Trying to get some more people to ID them.

A few more pics.

Turns out they are very likely "Tocantins" and there may be more than one type of "Tocantins" altifrons.

Hey Mate, so do you have a positive ID on this fish?

I guess we can never be 100% positive with things like localities... but after much thought, talking to geo guys and comparing with as many pics as possible they are very likely "Tocantins".

Body shape and colour look quite different to "Xingu" and "Tapajos" that we thought they may have been. I guess we were thrown off by the fact that there is also another "Tocantins altifrons" here that has a high body and long snout.

If you have the Weidner book they look identical to the group of fish on the inside covers.
