Hey guys,

My wife has noticed that the Bio balls that we are using in our Aquarium are always slimy.

She asked her dad who is a Mechanical Engineer, and a Goldfish afficionado, about the Bio Balls. Well, accdg. to my father-in-law, they may seem Good Bacteria. However, Bacteria are still Bacteria.

Good Bacteria can also mutate into a Harmful bacteria. What can you say about this?

Is there any scientific site that will explain the use of Bio-balls? and its origin.

The slime growing on your bio-ballss probly dirty food the getts clogged up. You should clean or change boi-ball once evry 6 weeks. That is good bactria thats in them when the water rushs past them the bacteria "eats" any impuritys in the water.
Hope i helped at all.

Good bacteria will not *mutate* into bad bacteria, at least in any way that would directly impact your fish, or your bio-film. As BlackGhost said, give your balls a good rinse in tank water from a WC once in awhile. It will help manage your nitrates better ;)

RAOTFIFOL.... FUNNY

as for the bio balls

Bioballs hold bacteria as stated above, good bacteria and bad bacteria are both found in the air we live in. We promote good bacteria by our filter/sump configerations. By useing the incorrect setups you can promote bad bacteria. The bacteria can't change form/evolve in a matter of hours / day / weeks, it can die or be replaced by bad bateria, this is only under the correct circumstances.

Most of the slime on the bio balls will be an algee growth not a bacterial growth

as said above

Just wash your balls from time to time, then you should get rid of the slime................. maybe some rexona too your other half will appreciate it! LOL (sorry couldn't help myself)
