Dee,

I just had another look at that second pic and have you noticed anything? I might have drank too much wine this afternoon (not me, never) but it looks like a predator with a nice red eye coming out of the rock. Half way up and slightly to the right.

I reckon the Ribbon Eel has a mouth big enough for a small clown. They look awesome though.

u can see the algea pearling.

I'd say it's more likely to be micro bubbles from the powerheads than "pearling" like a FW plant would do.

So tell me guys, are they a huge learning curve and lots of time or what? One would look lovely in the lounge room but I don't have a great deal of time left over.
MAC

Nathan
Wed Mar 14, 2007, 09:14 AM
nah they dont take a lot of time, its not that much to learn, a couple more aspects then fw, but definitely well worth it, id say its less maintanance then a fw planted tank.

Thu Mar 15, 2007, 03:11 AM
Getting mine set up on the weekend. Can't wait.

Thinking about getting a small school of yellow tail damsels, two clown fish and maybe a Flame Angel.

How does that sound.

It's a Jebo tank 100 x 65 high x 40.

Robdog
Thu Mar 15, 2007, 04:12 AM
I think you have another Jebo that would be better for the conversion me thinks.

Then you could stock it with Whale Sharks

Ben

Thinking about getting a small school of yellow tail damsels, two clown fish and maybe a Flame Angel.

YTB damsels are nice but are very nasty. another option are the green chromis. Very peaceful and look awesome in a school.

Any of the dwarf flame species are very nice but only one per tank.

When you get the clowns Merrilyn put them in the tank as the last fish as once again they can be nasty little buggers.

Also, get a clean up crew of sorts. There are some excellent tropical shrimp species around. Hermit crabs are ok but the issue is they are clumsey and will nock corals and live rock over.

Small turbo snails are excellent.

Robdog
Thu Mar 15, 2007, 05:09 AM
Don't get the hermits with the hairy green and white speckled legs. Clumsy and love picking on snails and pulling them out of their shells for fun.
Mine are about to get a ride back to the LFS.
The one on the left is King of the Bastard Hermit brigade. The one on the right beats on him when ever they meet. Pity he is outnumbered 3-1.

Sorry for butting in on this question but i make up my own salt water. I was using Red sea's marine salt but now using Red Sea's new Coral Pro salt.

http://www.redseafish.com/Product.asp?dir=y&CatId=98&SubID=68&proID=283

I have just started using it and have noticed positive results.

Chat soon Merrilyn! :D

Nathan
Thu Mar 15, 2007, 09:41 AM
im use the salt it comes with, an i think ill be continueing to make my own salt water, its not really that difficult, cheap and yeah its a good product.

Robdog
Thu Mar 15, 2007, 10:07 AM
I've done mine the cheating way and bought ocean water from the LFS

I've got the same salt as you Nathan. What kind of ratios do you use for salt to water? It's supposed to be 35g of salt to a litre or something right?
How the heck do I measure 35g of salt?

Nathan
Thu Mar 15, 2007, 10:17 AM
yea what i do is i add 300grams of salt to my 10l bucket go fill it up an pour it in, seems to b working fine, i use a hot an cold tap i run the hot one about a quater of the bucket then the rest cold, it dissovles the salt really well.

i use kitchen scales for the meausuremeants, its pretty easy once u get into a rythem

Gee Benny, sounds like you been getting some rock solid advice on the RedSea CoralPro salt mate hehe ;) Tis good to hear your seeing results from using it ... it's a very good product IMO.

What kind of flow have you got going in there?

Nathan
Mon Apr 09, 2007, 07:23 AM
haha yea most ppl when they see the tank reckon its an anemone of some sort, ive just got the factory default equipment going.

only thing ive modififed or i should say added to the tank is some purigen everything else is the way it came in the box.

i got this clam sorta thing, dno what its called its in the background of the strrawberry dottyback, unfortunately i placed it to close to another coral an its lower half has been stung an is dying, i dno if itl recover or not, i certainly hope so.

any suggestions (apart from moving it)?

Nathan
Sun Apr 15, 2007, 04:35 AM
it has recovered well. my redline is carrying eggs again.

just a question to anyone with powerheads in there rsm, how did u get the cord out of the tank to the powerpoint?

Dee
Sun Apr 15, 2007, 07:04 AM
just a question to anyone with powerheads in there rsm, how did u get the cord out of the tank to the powerpoint?

G'day Nathan,

Use either the fan knock out panel space or the chiller knock out panel space at the back, depending on the size of your power cord plug.

That clam thing is a open brain mate and will recover in time ;) I damaged mine too  it's bounced back nicely.

RSM is looking good mate, keep up the good work ;)

Cheers,

Dee.

Spewing about the Mandarin Nathe. They are one of the most beautiful fish that we can keep in a tank.

I really like that coral in the last pic.

Are you using the RedSea substrate that came with the pack?? If so, do you have problems keeping it clean??

Nathan
Wed May 23, 2007, 06:05 AM
yea its a shame, the colours on it were just awesome, but the bugger wouldnt eat.

yeah i am using the red sea substrate that came with it, and yes it does get dirty really quickly, same as the glass, the algea builds up really quick but its easy to get rid of, i just stir the gravel up most of the time it gets rid of it but yeah i do have problems with it, do you?

Robdog
Thu May 24, 2007, 12:37 AM
If I leave an area untouched for a little while it turns poo brown(with algae I guess) Looking at Dee's pics I was thinking it may be due to insufficient flow around the tank but looking at Xteme's standard in shop display yesterday(which was clean as a whistle) I'm not so sure. :?

Nathan feed madarins live black worms when you first get them, they rarely turn them down. Once they are feeding and accustomed to the tank they will start feeding on frozen food. Years go when I had mandarins they spawned after heavy feedings of live black worms

Nathan
Fri May 25, 2007, 09:11 AM
well im not sure if ill try another mandarin, well not anytime soon anyway.

thanx for the tip if go down that path again ill certainly give it a go
