I had thought about how I can make a cheap canster filter for far less the price of a store bought and this is what i had come up with.

1 nappy bucket $14

3 pices of PVC piping 20mm diameter by 1 meter $11.70

6 elbow joints $9.90

4 ring clamps (hose clamps) $7.88

2 end caps for the pipes $2.62

1 Aqua One submersible power head 1200L/Hr $29.95

4 suction caps with rings $3.00

2 faucet socket (bulk head) 6.34

1 dura ball valve PVC (so i can turn the input off)

1 tube of silicon $6.48

and I skimped a bit on the hose I just used regular garden hose

This filte is for a 30g tank

First i have made a hole in the lid for the intake bulk head as well as making a hole near the bottom of the bucket for the outlet bulk head. Also I made a square flap for the power cord in the side of the bucket and made two patches on the outside and the inside of the bucket and covered it with silicon.

I placed the tap on the intake above the lid so if i take the lid of the bucket off I can turn this off so I will not have a lot of water on the floor.

The bucket lid has silicon around the inside of the lid to make a better seal when the lid goes on.

I drilled holes in the two pipes that will be in the tank the input from the tank has many more and larger holes than the spray bar.

When the pump is going there is enough suction in the bucket to draw water from the tank into the bucket.

Sydney is on the East coast of Australia,

Most of the stuff you will find at bunnings, the pump you will have too get from a LFS or Age of Aquariums.

I had went to Rockdale's bunnings and they didn't have them there but was told to go to the plumbing supply store across the road from them behind the electrial shop.
